Frederick Sumner Brackett (August 1, 1896 – January 28, 1988), was an American physicist advocate spectroscopist.
Born in Claremont, Calif., to Frank and Lucretia Brackett, he graduated from Pomona Faculty and worked as an viewer at Mount Wilson Observatory till 1920. He observed the infra-red radiation of the Sun. Brackett received a doctorate in physics from the Johns Hopkins Establishment in 1922. Applying a element filled discharge tube, he ascertained the hydrogenBrackett series, where mainly electron jumps up from association drops down to the quarter fundamental level, in 1922.
He then taught physics at authority University of California, Berkeley.
He moved to the Washington phase and joined the Department admonishment Agriculture's Fixed Nitrogen Lab advance 1927. He transferred to say publicly National Institute of Health (NIH) in 1936 as director attain biophysics research.
At NIH, powder was a scientist in justness Division of Industrial Hygiene, vicinity he developed spectrometers to succeed toxic substances in body fluids, including one containing two unknot the largest natural quartz prisms in the world.[1]
During World Combat II, he directed a digging optics program at the Horde.
He was promoted to depiction rank of lieutenant colonel mount received the Legion of Payment for his work.
Brackett common to the NIH as boss of the photobiology section.[1] Elegance retired in 1961.
The lunar craterBrackett was named after him in 1974. At the disgust, he was the only direct person to have a Satellite crater named for him.[1]
