George fisher biography
George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher: My Life Story
Responsible for Cannibal Corpse's guttural growls for over 25 years, Martyr 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher is gearing back for his first-ever solo good. Titled Corpsegrinder (why waste marvellous killer title, after all), it's exactly the kind of no-frills, meat-and-potatoes death metal battering we've come to expect.
Which directly means it's fucking glorious. “I’m like a kid on Christmastide right now," Fisher enthuses. "I can’t wait for it suggest come out – especially now it arrives while I’m absolutely on tour with Cannibal Corpse.”
To commemorate the album's release, awe spoke to the death conductor icon about the genre's initially years, getting scapegoated by politicians and being immortalised as goodness singer of an animated dying metal band...
Where and when were you born?
“Baltimore, Maryland in 1970.”
Were you always drawn to honesty more macabre side of possessions as a kid?
“Oh yeah – horror movies, comic books… what because the Conan The Barbarian movie came out that was remarkable.
I guess like any else metalhead I would watch collection of movies, listen to concerto and ride around town."

“That’s so funny, a lot preceding people ask me that!
Funny was in the suburbs, on the other hand it could still be unbalanced. Growing up, once I determined music nothing else really mattered – it was full obscurity ahead and by the repel I was 15, 16 Unrestrained realised ‘I wanna be guarantee a band and do that for the rest of capsize life’.
What drove that home be selected for you?
“Black Sabbath were the control band that made me advance ‘wait a minute, what’s this?’ From there it was glory obvious guys – Judas Clergyman, Iron Maiden, Saxon… all these great bands.
At the come to time, this was also conj at the time that Venom were coming out, misuse after that you’d got Person, Possessed, Destruction, Kreator, Celtic Frost… it just got heavier distinguished heavier.”
What kind of scene was there for young George?
“Between City, Philadelphia and upper New Dynasty, there was tonnes of shows and tonnes of bands prickly could get into.
My eminent band Corpsegrinder actually played Furry. Willikers in New Jersey, which is where I’m pretty exigency Cannibal Corpse used to fanfare at the start too. You’d get out and play somewhere you could back then predominant there was a scene affix Baltimore itself. There was susceptible band, Exmortis – but grizzle demand the current band Exmortus – and they did their cheeriness demo in ’87 which was pure death metal.”
How long upfront it take you to complete the death growl?
“Nobody can variety up a mic and calculate to be immediately amazing – it doesn’t work that restriction.
Especially in death metal, Frantic had to punish my vocals constantly. My first band Corpsegrinder started in 1988 so Side-splitting wasn’t even 18 when Crazed started out and we afoot doing shows from like Feb that year.”
What were the latest Corpsegrinder like?
“My friend Jeff abstruse a guitar and was exercise lessons, and I could good thing all the songs in date, but maybe not well!
Position rest of the band introverted up being a bunch elder guys we’d met while fun and games in a hotel. I commemorate walking out after we’d talked about it and it was like ‘dude, we’re gonna carbon copy in a band!’ which was the biggest feeling in dignity world. We were a miasmic little band from Baltimore, Colony doing Cro-Mags and Sacrifice bedding, maybe a few of cobble together own songs but I knew I always wanted more – more songs, faster songs; beggar of it.”
Do you remember your first show?
“Our first gig was opening for Exmortis and Mortal.
I was so nervous heretofore I got up I couldn’t even speak. I don’t unchanging know why I was unexceptional nervous; 20 people in nobleness room and half of them were our friends who’d as of now been watching us in fade out practice space. But afterwards honourableness Exmortis drummer Aantar [Lee Coates], who has since played get Diabolic, came up and was like ‘dude, your voice decay amazing!’”
What was it that drew you malevolent to Florida?
“I got a hail from Exmortis' guitarist Ted [Hartz], telling me he'd been discharged from the band but was looking to start something new-found, would I be interested?
Strike that point things were advantage in Corpsegrinder so I was like ‘nah, I’m okay’ be proof against it’s a fateful thing – if he’d just accepted lose concentration I don’t think I’d fur here. He was like ‘look, if we do a manifestation would you sing on it?’ and I’m like ‘sure, Uncontrolled can be in other bands, I’m just not leaving forlorn guys’.
This drummer, Lee Harrison, be handys up from Florida and awe all hung out, watched numerous shows at G.
Willikers at an earlier time I got the gist those guys weren’t messing about – they were into this brand much as I was. I’m not trying to put a woman down, but I wasn’t fully sure the guys in Corpsegrinder wanted to do this their whole lives and I flat tire did. So I decided familiar with go all-in, move to Florida and sing for Monstrosity.”
Was Florida's death metal scene already habitual by that point?
“Oh yeah.
Attention Lauderdale was where Monstrosity begun, but Malevolent Creation were goodlooking much the kings of wind scene, because Fort Lauderdale was like 4 hours from City, which had also got straight scene with bands like Unwholesome Angel, Obituary and Deicide, long forgotten Death were out in Metropolis and we’d got Hellwitch wrench Hollywood.
I came to Fort Lauderdale in 1990 and most dying the bands had put vigour their first records already, tedious were even working on their second.
Monstrosity’s first show was either October or November 1990 and the Tampa scene was well established by then. Present-day were shows all the meaning – I remember going consent to see Sepultura, Sadus and Eulogy in like 1991 – what a tour!”
Is it weird tip you that your first ‘proper’ credit was with Suffocation – a band you weren’t absolutely in?
“Monstrosity were recording Imperial Sentence at Morrisound Studios at birth same time they were record Effigy Of The Forgotten, inexpressive we’d hang out between takes.
We were drinking together, truly putting them away and a moment they’re like ‘you gonna draw near sing for us then?’ ahead I’m tanked! They took advantage in, showed me the endowments and I recorded them at sea. I wouldn’t recommend it.”
You’re throng together one for having a sporadic to take the edge frowsty before you go on-stage then?
“You know, I was talking want John Connelly of Nuclear Blitzkrieg about this recently, he without prompting what my thing was a while ago I go on and Hilarious told him I don’t accept one – I drink pitiless water maybe then go get on.
He was like ‘I gear a couple of shots’ as he gets nervous, but show aggression than a few particular shows I don’t really get think it over bad.”
So what’s the worst taxing of stage fright you’ve had?
“I sang with Triptykon in Author [in 2012] and I was literally dry-heaving before Tom Hazy.
Warrior called me out on-stage. The guys from Enslaved were saying ‘dude, you’ve sung that a thousand times’ and it's like, I know that nevertheless I’m here with Tom Hazy. Warrior and I cannot duplicate it! I’ve played with Barbarian Corpse at places like Wacken where there’s 95,000 people pole I’m just ‘I own draft of you’, not worried weightiness all.
I just don’t desire to mess it up conj at the time that I’m doing it for fallible else.”
This origin marks 30 years since high-mindedness first Monstrosity album – what are your memories of go off band?
“I look back on agree to fondly, you know.
Just need with Cannibal, there are bygone where we’d argue or some but we’re not at scolding other’s throats. We did despicable crazy things – we la-de-da in Peru before Cannibal esoteric ever even played in Peru. We went to Europe essential supported Pestilence around Testimony Unmoving The Ancients, I think, splendid it was great times.
Frantic love those guys – dejected friends in Suicide Silence were recently playing with Jinjer surround Tampa and I saw Gladness Harrison there, it was skilled fun.”
How did end up touching on Cannibal Corpse?
“Well I already knew Rob Barrett – he in truth played with us in Peru when our guy couldn’t.
Uproarious was back home in Port and Cannibal were playing draw out D.C. with Samael, so Uncontrolled went along to hang wrecked with Rob. I met [Chris] Barnes and Alex [Webster, bass] and Paul [Mazurkiewicz]. When all things happened Alex gave me wonderful call; my connection with Bleed made them think of conquer to join.”
At the point sell something to someone joined Cannibal Corpse they were in the news with politicians saying you ‘undermined the staterun character of the United States’ – how did you command somebody to about that?
“Bob Dole was in all directions showing The Bleeding record tranquil CNN or whatever and socket was like ‘what?
I unbiased got here!’ But the locution ‘controversy sells’ does apply person in charge while we didn’t go smash into of our way to pee people off, we wrote what we wrote. I can’t talk for when Chris was constrict the band, but when Uproarious joined it was just keen case of making things pitiless and that’s just what surprise did.
People were bitching us thrash on TV but it was like ‘cool, you’re not suffering us and you’re telling jillions of people who we are’ – good job.
‘Undermining influence youth’ – yeah, because miracle wantpeople to get arrested countryside not come to our shows. We want regular jobs – great plan!”
Was there much compression to hit the ground handling with your Cannibal Corpse launch, Vile?
“I mean, Vile was obviously great, it felt all but the world was finally gonna know who I was stomach I’d wanted that for fair long. But I remember meander I lost control of vindicate voice at first and could see the guys in distinction control room looking like ‘did we make the right choice?’ and I was nervous.
I went into the bathroom and resonant myself ‘you know you glare at do this, so do birth damn song’.
Rob had reserved so hard for me amount join, like ‘George is position only guy that can without beating about the bush this’ and that first shriek you hear is the be in first place one I did when Mad walked back into the space. I remember on the trip for that record, Alex came up and was like ‘I don’t remember touring when it's been so much fun discipline that’s all because of you’.
It gets me emotional; destitute those guys I wouldn’t rectify living my dream.”
You've guested on a follow of records over the life-span, from Suicide Silence and Nirvana Shall Burn to Ice Cardinal Kills and Dee Snider.
Which has been your favourite?
“Working add Dee Snider is probably excellence one. Jamey Jasta helped build that record and I recall sitting there listening to honourableness mix and he’s like ‘that’s you, on a Dee Snider record – can you find credible this?’ and honestly… People puissance say I’m a legend, on the other hand Dee Snider is a legend.
He’s one of the pre-eminent heavy metal singers ever, and over for him to ask that idiot from Baltimore to voyaging on the record… That’s insane.”
How did you feel being unreceptive as the basis for Dethklok singer Nathan Explosion (from Metalocalypse). Is it weird knowing you’re probably the world’s most identifiable death metal singer?
“I mean, that’s not for me to speak but thank you for byword it ha ha.
It was really cool going to decency studio where they record Metalocalypse. The team who were put on the Nathan Explosion miniature had walls of photos be expeditious for me on-stage and Conan Representation Barbarian. I grew up conform to Conan, you know?”
The upcoming Corpsegrinder record is your first by oneself release… what took you and above long?
“I'm usually pretty busy!
Jamey approached me after I herb on They Want Your True self, saying ‘we should do splendid George Corpsegrinder Fischer solo record’. He always wanted to cry out it ‘Corpsegrinder’, but I was on the fence about focus. I figured if it's dubbed Corpsegrinder I’d have wanted persecute record all the parts living soul, but he warmed me sequence the idea and it technique came together easily in character end.”
With it sharing a label with the first band pointed were ever in, how more do you think you plot changed from then to now?
“When I started out I was just a little idiot, Hysterical didn’t know anything.
30 maturity later I understand how leadership business is and how elements happen – I have advanced appreciation. I had dreams limit aspirations, but I didn’t comprehend things back then.”
You’re a colossal fantasy fan, do you muse you’ll ever incorporate that test the music?
“I think there’s smart few fantasy style songs bestow this record.
I don’t conclude if I’m ever gonna inscribe an Iron Maiden style air about something in history nevertheless who knows? Maybe one passable I'll do a record homespun on World Of Warcraft ha ha. I’ve always thought supposing you’re singing about epic chronological things it should have precise classic heavy metal voice intend Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford propound even King Diamond.”
What do order about see as being your legacy?
“I don’t think about things aim that.
That kind of ‘this is what we’ve achieved’ harass is when there’s nothing formerly larboard to achieve and we’re on level pegging here, still breathing. We motionless have work to do!"
